After a two-month review, the regulator suspended the sale of unapproved Viagra tablets, even though it was “not for the treatment of a medical condition”.
A pharma group from Bangkok said it had received reports that a medication it had been reviewing was being banned for unapproved use. The Thai company, MediPharm, said in a statement: “Pharma pharmaceutical regulator Thamipharma issued a suspension for the sale of unapproved Viagra tablets in 2014, including its unapproved indications for treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension.”
Pharma regulator Thamipharma said it had received reports of unapproved MediPharm products being banned for unapproved use. MediPharm said it had been “reviewing the product licence and product safety information for all unapproved MediPharm products, which were not listed in the Thai Viagra tablets list.”
Under Thai law, unapproved medicines must only be prescribed by a doctor and must contain the active substance – sildenafil – and the prescriber must then decide whether the medicine should be given to a patient. Sildenafil is not approved for use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction and is not available over the counter.

Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the lungs, allowing blood to flow more easily. This helps to relax the heart and improve its workload. Sildenafil is also used to treat premature ejaculation in men. It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. It works by relaxing the muscles in the penis and increasing blood flow. This medication is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in individuals with heart failure, often with left ventricular outflow obstruction (e.g. NYHA class III or IV heart failure) and in people with conditions such as priapism (a prolonged and painful erection).

This condition can occur at any age, but it can develop to a certain extent at an older age. Erectile dysfunction affects more than 4 out of 10 men over the age of men 65 years and older.
